Evolution of Layouts

For a long time, since the first typewriters were introduced, keyboard layouts have undergone many changes and modifications to meet the needs of users and make typing easier. Originally, the keyboard consisted of only letters and numbers, and the layout of the keys was often determined by a particular country or region.

However, as technology evolved and the use of keyboards increased globally, it became clear that the basic key system was not the most optimal for efficient typing. Thus came the first improvements to the keyboard in the form of special keys to accommodate punctuation marks, function keys, and other symbols.

Then, in 1936, one of the most significant breakthroughs in the history of layouts occurred – the “Quinert” (QWERTY) layout was developed, which became the world standard for keyboard layouts.

However, despite its popularity, the arrangement of keys of the “Quinert” layout is not considered the most efficient, as it was created for typewriters, where the main task was to prevent jamming of technical elements of the original printer.

Over time, other keyboard layouts have emerged, such as the alternative Dvorak Simplified Keyboard, which is based on the principles of ergonomics and the placement of the most commonly used letters in a comfortable position for the fingers. Currently, there are many different keyboard layouts, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Some customized layouts were created to increase typing speed, improve ergonomics, and reduce stress on fingers and wrists. With the advent of computers and electronic devices, users also have the ability to program their own keyboard layouts and customize them to suit their needs and preferences.

In this way, keyboard layouts continue to evolve and users can choose the options that are most comfortable for them given their individual preferences and needs.
